Reducing Spam on IETF RT Ticket System Queues

by News Gateway last modified 2005-07-29 12:37 PM

A challenge-response system is being installed in front of the email interface to the IETF Secretariat's ticket system.

Tomorrow, as the next stage in dealing with the impact of spam on IETF operations, the Secretariat will start protecting its ticket system using the TMDA tool . Unknown senders of mail to various Secretariat addresses will be required, once only, to manually confirm their intention to send mail. Email addresses subscribed to ietf.org mailing lists will be automatically white-listed.

The first list to be protected will be tech-support: ietf-action@ietf.org. If all goes well with the first list, then the other lists will be protected over the next week.

For your information, 99% of the mail reaching the Secretariat ticket system today is spam (e.g., 289 of a 292 message sample).
